Pathway to Surgery

The total bariatric surgery process takes two to six months.

Here is a typical surgery schedule, designed to help our patients plan a timeline for a successful weight loss surgery.

Steps Needed for Bariatric Surgery		Typical Timeline for Each Step
1. Attend seminar		Scheduled within 1 week
2. Appointments scheduled with internist/behaviorist/surgeon		Scheduled typically within 1 month after orientation
3. Dictation completed and approved		Completed 1 week after appointments
4. Testing ordered		Tests scheduled within 3 to 4 weeks
5. Insurance authorization requested		Requested 2 weeks after last appointment
6. Insurance authorization received		Received within 2 weeks to 3 months after request
7. Chart given to surgery scheduler		Immediately after authorization received
8. Test received and approved		Test received and approved within 8 weeks of appointment date
9. Labs received and approved		Labs received and approved within 2 to 4 weeks of appointment date
10. Surgery scheduled		Surgery is scheduled once labs, test results and authorization is received
